aga-mus--Toad Stool-Bug Agaric This fungus contains several toxic compounds, the best known of which is Muscarin. The symptoms of poisoning do not develop at once, usually twelve to fourteen hours elapse before the initial attack. There is no antidote, treatment, entirely symptomatic (Schneider). Agaricus acts as an intoxicant to the brain, producing more vertigo and delirium than alcohol, followed by profound sopor with lowered reflexes. Jerking, twitching, trembling, and itching are strong indications.

Palpitation during coition; depressed afterward. Premature ejaculation. Pressure or burning sticking from heart to left scapula. Angina pectoris, has excessive pain only. Metastases from suppressed milk. Single vertebra sensitive to heat. Spine sensitive, > pressure or touch; shooting, burning along; seems short (Sul.), < stooping; stiff. Restless arms. BURNING-ITCHING (Ap.), < IN SKIN; AS IF FROZEN; changing place on scratching. Skin pains when cold. Chilblains. Yawning; before pains or spasms; as a concomitant. Chills or sweats easily. Sweats on alternate sides. Night sweats. Itching, over affected part. Cold buttocks.

The mental symptoms are such as you would expect. Great changeability, irritability, mental depression and complaints which come on from overexertion of the mind and prolonged study. The brain seems to be developed tardily. Children are late in learning to talk and walk, thus combining the features of two remedies, Natrum muriaticum, which has the symptom "late learning to talk," and Calcarea carb., which has the symptom "late learning to walk." It will be noticed in Calcarea that this is due to a defect in bone weakness. In Agaricus it is a mental defect, a slowly developing mind. Children with twitching and early fainting, nervous girls prior to puberty who have convulsions from being scolded, from excitement and shock; late in mental development. Children who cannot remember, make mistakes and are slow in learning. Nervous patients who on going over their manuscripts find out their mistakes in writing and spelling. The condition of the mind is one in which they are slow to grasp ideas; wrong words float in kaleidoscopically. When we read in the book "the whole psychological sphere as if paralyzed," we must read between the lines. The whole mind and sensorium seem paralyzed; the patient is sluggish, stupid, at times seems to be delirious; there is confusion of the mind so nearly like delirium that it is not unlike intoxication. A delirium such as is produced by alcohol. He also becomes silly, says foolish and silly things, sings and whistles at an inopportune time, makes verses and prophesies; or he lapses into an opposite state, becomes indifferent to Ids surroundings. One who is mild and placid becomes self-willed, obstinate and conceited. Difficulty in coordinating the movements of the muscles of the body. Incoordination of brain and spinal cord.

The most striking things running through this medicine are twitchings and tremblings, jerkings of the muscles and trembling of the limbs; quivering and tremors, everywhere these two features are present in all parts of the body and limbs. The twitching of the muscles becomes so extensive that it is a well-developed case of chorea. It has in its nature all that is found in chorea and has cured many cases. This is a general belonging to all parts to all muscles. Throughout the body there is a sensation of creeping and crawling. It is hardly confined to the skin, it is felt as if in the flesh, a sensation as if of ants. Itching of the skin all over which changes place from scratching. No place is exempt from this. There are strange sensations here and there upon the skin or in parts, cold sensations, sensations of cold needles and of hot needles; stinging and burning where the circulation is feeble, about the ears, nose, back of hands and fingers and toes, red spots with itching and burning as if frostbitten. It is a great remedy for chilblains. The patient is extremely nervous and sensitive to cold. Itching, pricking, tingling, etc., come on from mental exertion and are relieved from physical exertion. All the symptoms of Agaricus are also aggravated after sexual intercourse, especially in the symptoms of the spinal cord. It is useful for the symptoms which come on after coition in young, nervous married women, hysterical fainting after coition.

Delirium tremens. Delirium with constant raving. Dull, drawing headache in morning, extending into root of nose, with nosebleed or thick mucous discharge. Headaches of those who are subject to chorea ; or who readily become delirious in fever or with pain ; twitchings or grimaces. Redness, burning itching of ears, as if they had been frozen. Tongue dry. Very drowsy after dinner, quite unusual ; he sleeps very deeply and gets awake with pains in all limbs. Sudden convulsive coughs, < forenoons, or during day. Pain in lumbar region and sacrum ; and while sitting ; pain, sore aching ; back not sensitive to touch. Burning itching on both hands, as if frozen ; parts hot, swollen, red. Trembling of hands. Stiffness in fingers from gout. Twitching of gluteal muscles. Pain in bones of lower legs, sometimes as if in the periosteum. Pain and inflammation of frost-bitten toes. Chilblains. Tearing in limbs < in rest or sitting, > moving. Pains in limbs with lameness and numbness. Uncertainty in walking, tumbling over everything in the way. Twitchings; of eyelids and eyeballs; of cheeks ; in chest poster iorly ; in abdomen. Involuntary movements (especially with children) while awake ; ceasing during sleep. Spasmodic motions, from simple involuntary motions and jerks of single muscles, to a dancing of whole body. Chorea. Paralysis of upper and lower limbs. Incipient softening of spinal marrow. During sleep, one does not notice any motion of eyes whatever in clonic spasms of eyes. Chilblains, frost-bite, and all consequences of exposure to cold, particularly in face. Shiverings over body, run from above downward. Shudders ; with bitter vomiting after supper. Sweat when walking, or with slightest exertion. Profuse sweat. Burning, itching, redness and swelling, as from frost-bites. Drunkards, especially for their headaches.

Agaricus is one of the few remedies of diagonal symptoms : they may appear at the same time on opposite sides of the body —but diagonally. Cold sensations : icy cold fefcling on a small place, left chest near shoulder-blade. Formication and burning in gluteal muscles. Neuralgic pains as though sharp pieces of ice touched the parts or as if cold needles ran through the nerves. (/4rs. hot needles.) It seems as if the whole body would dwindle to nothing. Itching and burning all over with great distress. AILANTHUS GLANDULOSA : Tree of Heaven In our old garden at Wyvenhoe, years ago, there were two magnificent Ailanthus trees, whose memory has helped to rivet attention to this little-known, but invaluable remedy. Its dramatic history, as a medicine, is only recorded, so far as we have been able to discover, by Dr. Hughes, but since this serves to impress on the mind what Ailanthus is good for, and its peculiarities of malevolence, i.e. its magnificent curative power in some desperate cases of acute disease, it is worth repeating. Dr. Hughes tells us that one of our most accomplished physicians “ supplies the first chapter ”. His own child was seized with all the symptoms of early malignant scarlet fever : vomiting, severe headache, intolerance of light, dizziness, hot red face, inability to sit up, rapid small pulse ; drowsiness, yet great restlessness ; much anxiety. Two hours later on dr. wsiness had become insensibility, with constant, muttering delinum, and the child did not recognize the members of her family. She was now covered, in patches, with an eruption of miliary rash, with efflorescence between its points, all of a dark, almost livid colour ; the eruption more profuse on forehead and face than elsewhere. The father gave his child up for lost.

Agaricus—Amanita (the name under which its symptoms appear in Hering’s Guiding Symptoms)—the Fly Agaric (or fungus) —the Bug Agaric—the “ fou ” fungus of the French, has its own peculiar place and very distinctive symptoms in homoeopathic Materia Medica. Its proving by Hahnemann appeared in Stapf s Archives, a contemporary periodical, with his provings of some other drugs—notably Psorinum, of which we have, I believe, no translation. But that of Agaricus is to be found in Vol. II of his Chronic Diseases. Here Hahnemann describes the fungus as “ surmounted by a scarlet-coloured top, which is studded vith whitish excres cences, and white leaflets He says it is to be first triturated, then dynamized in the usual way to, as he suggests, the 30th potency. One associates Agaricus especially with chorea : but its notable twitchings and jerkings are only a small part of its drug- picture. One remembers Dr. Blackley of old in the London Homoeopathic Hospital, who used Agaricus for things where, to one's profound ignorance, it seemed strangely inappropriate : but he probably knew its uses better than most of us !—For instance, it seemed a curious drug to give for pneumonia !—and yet, this is what Kent says about it :— " Agaricus is a great medicine in chest troubles, though seldom thought of. It has cured what seemed to be consumption. Catar rhal condition of the chest, with night sweats and history of ner vous symptoms. Violent cough in isolated attacks ending in sneezing. Convulsive cough, with sweats toward evening, with frequent pulse, expectoration of pus-like mucus, worse in the mornings and when lying on back. Add to this the symptoms of Agaricus as described, and Agaricus will take hold of that case. Cases of incipient phthisis.
