WEAKENING, intellection; muscles, heart, back, limbs, etc. Gives out, leans on something or lies down; with backache, profuse secretions, sweat, etc. Soft, thin blooded and cold. Old, fleshy, dropsical or paralytic. SHARP STITCHINGS, stabbings or catches in joints, muscles, chest, head, epigastrium, back, etc. Throbbing, numb or cold single parts, abdomen, fingers, etc. Acrid discharges. Sub-acute conditions. Parts lain on are painful and go to sleep. .................... Peevish. Easily startled; < touch; on dropping to sleep. Anxious aversion to solitude. Headaches, into eyes; wake from sleep. Eyes weak. Vision, spotted; like drops before. Puffs over, inner angle of eyes or baggy upper lids. Stitches out of ears. Head colds; go to chest. Nose stuffed, > open air; swelled; yellow-green or crusty discharge. Puffy face. Slimy mouth. Gray tongue. Itching gums. Hawks up tough mucus in A.M. DIFFICULT SWALLOWING. Salty regurgitation. Vomits sour mucus. Sensitive, distended stomach and abdomen. Fulness; from but little, even after drinks; as if full of water. Anxious at epigastrium. Throbbing back of stomach; at navel. Gastric pains going to back, chest, limbs, etc. Flatulence. Hard tympanites. Stool difficult; of large, hard lumps, then burning or torn feeling. Piles inflamed, bleeding; descend when urinating or coughing, > riding horseback; stick like fine needles, > cool bathing. Burning in l. kidney. Nocturnal enuresis of adults. Urine foamy, with thick, tough, red sediment. Delayed first menses. Amenorrhœa. Colic, then irritating menses; > washing. Inefficient labor pains. Catarrhal aphonia. Respiration short, < least motion or walking; asthmatic, alternating with diarrhœa; with vertigo. Incessant, hard retching or choking, futile cough; then vomiting. Pertussis. Lungs seem to stick to ribs. Pleurisy. Stabbing chest pains. Heart seems to hang by a thread; pains toward l. scapula. Palpitation; then weakness; in valvular disease. Arrhythmia. Cardiac degeneration.

The patient is whimsical, irascible, irritable to the very highest degree, quarrels with his family and with his bread and butter. He never wants to be alone, is full of fear and imaginations when alone, "fear of the future, fear of death, fear of ghosts." If compelled to remain alone in the house he is wakeful, sleepless, or his sleep is full of horrible dreams. He is never at peace, is full of imaginations and fear. "What if the house should burn up!" "What if I should do this or that!" and "What if this and the other thing should happen! He is oversensitive to everything, sensitive to every atmospheric change; he can never get the room at just exactly the right temperature; he is sensitive to every draft of air and to the circulation of air in the room. He cannot have the windows open, even in a distant part of the house. He will get up at night in bed and look around to see where that draft of air comes from. His complaints are worse in wet weather, and in cold weather. Pains: He is sensitive to the cold and is always shivering. His nerves feel the cold; they are all painful when it is cold. The neuralgias shoot here and there when it is cold, and if the part affected be kept warm, the pain goes to some other place. All his pains change place and go into the cold part; if he covers up one part, the pain goes to the part uncovered. This remedy is full of sticking, burning, tearing pains, and these fly around from place to place. Of course Kali carb. has pains that remain in one place, but usually the pains fly, around in every direction, Pains cutting like knives. Pains like hot needles, sticking, stinging and burning. These pains are felt in internal parts and dry passages. Burning in the anus and rectum, described as if a hot poker were forced into that passage; burning as with fire.

K O CO For diseases of old people, dropsy and paralysis; with dark hair, lax fibre, inclined to obesity (Am-c., Graph.). After loss of fluids or vitality, particularly in the anemic (Chin., Ph-ac., Phos., Psor.). Cannot bear to be touched; starts when touched ever so lightly, especially on the feet. Pains stitching, darting, worse during rest and lying on affected side (stitching, darting, better during rest and lying on painful side, Bry.). Very much inclined to take cold.

Stitch pain in right abdomen, worse from motion. Cutting pain left upper abdomen, extending from lower left chest, where there is a sticking at the same time. KALI CARBON 1 CUM Inflammation, soreness, stitches and tingling as from ascarides in varices of rectum. Anal fistula. Menses too early, scanty, of pungent odour, acrid, covering thighs with an itching eruption. Violent colicky pain in abdomen before menses, constipation during. Pressing and bearing down of pregnant females, as if a load were falling into the pelvis. (Sepia, Lil. tigr. etc.) Violent pains in the small of the back in pregnant females. Impending abortion with pains from back into buttocks and thighs ; discharge of coagula : habitual ; during the second or third month. Labour pains insufficient. Violent backache : wants back pressed. (Sepia.) Bearing down from back into pelvis. The pains are stitching and shooting, or they are in the back, shooting down into glutei muscles or pass off down thighs. Difficult wheezing breathing. Asthma : must lean forward with head on knees : worse in a.m. Terrible attacks of asthma, worse at 3 a.m. Cough at 3 a.m., repeated every half-hour. Cutting pain in chest ; in evening ; after lying down ; does not know how she shall lie ; worse lying on right side ; in a.m.

Kent says : " The Kali carb. patient is a hard one to study, and the remedy itself is a hard one to study.” And Farrington says that ” Kali carb. is indicated in a great variety of diseases, but is a drug much neglected in practice ”, perhaps because, except in a few of its uses, as in asthma and pneumonia, it does not appeal strongly enough.to the imagination, and therefore is not—so to speak—” on the spot ”. To begin with, then, the Kali carb. patient is not one to arouse enthusiasm : a tiresome patient, irritable and sensitive to the last degree—especially when rendered so by ill-health and sickness. " Never at peace.” Never wants to be alone. Full of imagina tions and fears. ” Fear of the future, of death, of ghosts ; fear that something is going to happen.” “ Does not seem to care for anything ”... a drab, uninteresting, wearisome sort of person ; the “ Here she comes again ! ” with a groan, patient : especially if ” she ” happens to be ” he ”. Not the patient who fires your interest, or stirs your pity. Nevertheless one of a big crowd. Here there are no outstanding mental symptoms to catch the imagination and make prescribing easy : but Kali carb., so sensitive, so frightened, so unhappy and un flourishing, needs badly the help that the remedy can confer. Nerves so sensitive—so on edge ! So easily frightened that, with Kali carb., " startled ” means ” frightened to death ”. Peevish, nervous ; and, a curious symptom, very characteristic of Kali carb., any bang, shock, or bad news is-felt in the stomach : fear is felt in the stomach. One remembers an aunt who, if you told her someone had cut his finger, would exclaim, “ Oh, you gave me such a pain in my knee ! ” With Kali carb. it is in the stomach.
