mezerSpurge Olive Skin symptoms, affections of bones, and neuralgias most important, especially about teeth and face. Bruised, weary feeling in joints, with drawing and stiffness. Pains of various kinds, with chilliness and sensitiveness to cold air. Bone pains. Eruptions after vaccination. Burning, darting sensation in the muscles; subsultus tendinum. Pains shoot upward and seem to draw patient up out of bed. Semi- lateral complaints. Patient is very sensitive to cold air.

Acrid secretions, pus, leucorrhœa, etc. Violent, irritative burning itching, burning smarting, burning boring, etc. with coldness of part affected. Neuralgia; after shingles. Ulcers. Effects of suppressed eczema capitis. As of a cool breeze. Sudden pains, then chilly, sore or numb. Emaciation of part. Gouty-rheumatic-syphilitic dyscrasia. One-sided symptoms, whole or partial; numbness of one side of scalp. Head pain (l), into eyes, malar bones, neck, etc., with lachrymation. Painful skull. Pains outward along brows. Eyes seem dry. Ears feel open to cool wind. Deafness. Facial neuralgias. Cracks in angles of mouth. Dry, dark red mouth. Blunt teeth. Toothache into temples; > cool air. Tongue coated along one side only. Sorethroat in winter. Gastric pain, > milk. Contracted, prolapsed rectum. Glistening particles in stool. Stubborn, leucorrhœa. Dry, tickling cough; unto vomiting; < hot things. Aching, itching in popliteæ. Internal burning with external violent itching in small areas or single parts. Intolerable itching; changes place on scratching. Pruritis senilis. Eruptions ooze acrid, gluey moisture, form thick crusts, with pus beneath, or are chalky white. Milk crust. Deep, hard, painful ulcers; acrid pus, drying into crusts; < touch and warmth. Bones seem enlarged. Periostitis. Chilly; limbs feel cold. Heat of one hand.

The principal use of this remedy is in eruptions and ulcerations. The most violent and important of its symptoms are those of mucous membranes, skin and periosteum. The outer surfaces of the body are in a constant state of irritation; nervous feelings, biting, tingling, itching, changing place from scratching. Even when there is nothing to be seen, there is violent itching and the patient rubs and scratches until the part becomes raw and then burns; itching changes place; the part becomes cold after scratching, cold in spots. Itching changing place after scratching, especially when associated with no visible cause. As soon as he gets warm in bed or as soon as he goes into a warm room, the itching begins. Formication, itching, biting. The patient is so nervous that he is compelled to move, to change positions. Vesicular eruptions upon the skin, running a certain course, itching, burning like fire; dries into a crust and disappears; a new crop appears near or in the same place. Vesicles form crusts beneath which is ulceration; these crusts turn white, chalk-like, are thick, tough and leathery. They are often elevated; fluctuation beneath the crusts; pressure causes thick, white pus, sometimes yellow-white, to ooze forth; violent itching. The pains are aggravated by cold, but the itching and restlessness are worse from beat. A child tears. at the eruption with its fingers when the crusts are present. Scald-head; thick, white, elevated crusts; copious, white or yellow white pus, often offensive, putrid; vermin are often found among the crusts.

Hypochondriac and despotident. Takes no pleasure in anything. Everything seems to him dead, atul nothing makes a vivid impres sion upon his mind. Very violent headache ; head painful to slightest touch (after a slight vexation). Bone pain in bones of skull, especially aggravated by contact. Cranial bones pain, are swollen and sensitive to cold and contact : worse from motion and in the evening. Caries. Itching and burning of scalp. Head covered with a thick leather-like crust, under which thick white pus collects here and there, and hair is glued together. On the head, great elevated white scabs, under which ichor collects in quantity, and which begins to be offensive and to breed vermin. Ey es : sensation of dryness. Obstinate jerking of the muscles of left upper lid. Ear : Sensation of air distending the right external meatus. (Then the left.) Teeth feel blunt and elongated : painful on biting or from fresh air. Violent burning in mouth. Heat and scraping in fauces. Burning in throat and pharynx : dryness in fauces, hacking cough ; anxious oppression of breath, loosening of scanty mucus on coughing. Vomits b eer, which has a bitter taste {not water). Pain in periosteum of long bones, especially tibia : worse at night in bed ; least touch is intolerable.

(Daphne Mezereum) One of Hahnemann’s precious medicinal legacies. He says the juice, when touching the skin, produces a very painful burning, which lasts for a long time ; and he tells us that, since the medicinal power of this drug is not volatile, it is better to dry the plant and triturate it like all other dry substances. The bark, root and stem are used for making the tincture. Mezereum is a hardy shrub, native of Great Britain and northern countries : flowers early in spring, sometimes in the snow. Was introduced by Stapf, and extensively proved by Hahnemann and his band. The proving appears in his Chronic Diseases. It powerfully affects skin, bones, mucous membranes. Its action is characterized throughout by violence. Violent pains : violent itching : sudden, violent pains in face during sleep ; violent sensations of hunger ; violent burning in mouth ; violent pains in stomach and oesophagus ; violent inclination to cough, lower down than can be reached by cough ; “ violent acute fever ”. And all its violence is more violent by night. It is one of the remedies that may be needed in the treatment of syphilis ; also may be needed in a variety of skin conditions—very severe skin lesions, characterized by violent itching, and worse at night ; from heat of bed : the one drug that has got into the Repertory, as “ eruptions itching, worse warmth of fire It has annoying tw itchings : twitching of eyelid ; twitchings and jerking of muscles of right cheek ; twitching of muscles in pit of stomach. It is one of the few remedies that love and crave fat ham ; Mez. finds relief in drinking milk, and eating fat bacon.

Aggravation: Cold air; cold washing; at night; touch or motion; bad effects of mercury or alcohol. Epidemics occurring in January and February often call for Mezereum.
