Natrum carbonicum

Constitutions with aversion to open air and dislike to exercise, mental or physical ; imbecility.

Great debility: caused by heat of summer (Ant. c. ) ; exhaustion from least effort, mental or physical ; ready to drop after a walk ; chronic effects of sunstroke.

Chronic effects of sunstroke; now, with return of hot weather, suffers from headaches. '

Emaciation with pale face and blue rings around the eyes, dilated pupils; dark urine; anaemic; milky, watery skin and great debility.

Inability to think or to perform any mental labor, causes headache; feels stupefied if he tries to exert himself ; comprehension slow, difficult.

Intolerable melancholy and apprehension; is wholly occupied with sad thoughts.

Attacks of anxiety and restlessness during a thunder storm (Phos.) ; < from music (Sab.).

Headache : from slightest mental exertion ; from sun or working under gaslight (Glon., Lach.) ; with tension, in nape or occiput before menses; head feels too large, as if it would burst.

Face pale, with blue rings around the eyes; eyelids swollen ; catarrh ; mucus in throat and posterior nares ; constantly hawking to clear the throat; dropping into the throat from posterior nares.

Catarrh: extends to posterior nares and throat; hawking much thick mucus from throat; profuse discharge during day, stopped at night (Nux).

Lecture LXVII — Preparations of Soda — Natrum carb. and Natrum sulph.

The preparations of soda are quite similar, both chemically and medicinally, to those of potash, yet this similarity is not such that they may not follow the potash salts. We will see that Kali carb. is complementary to Natrum mur. in some of its symptoms. It seems that the salts of soda are indicated particularly in complaints that arise every summer or in the spring. Hot weather, electric changes in the atmosphere, or the direct rays of the sun give rise to various ailments. For instance, we find Natrum carb. useful for chronic headache, traceable to exposure to the rays of the sun. Under Natrum mur., we find great debility in summer; the patient feels as though he would faint away when walking in the sun.

The soda salts used in our materia medica are Carbonate of Soda or Natrum carb., Chloride of Sodium or Natrum mur., Arseniate of Soda or Natrum arsenicosum, Sulphate of Soda or Natrum sulph., Phosphate of Soda or Natrum phosphoricum, Natrum hypochlorosum and Borax.

Natrum Carbonicum.

Natrum carbonicum is the first preparation of soda we have to consider. It is much used in the allopathic school of practice as a remedy for acidity of the stomach. It is also used by the physicians of that school in eczema; for instance, in a case in which there is chronic thickening of the skin, the affected parts are bathed in carbonate of soda. No doubt, it relieves, but it cannot cure, unless it happens to be the indicated remedy, in which case it will cure as well as palliate. Carbonate of soda has also been introduced as a remedy for burns. In our practice the drug claims a high place, being something of a polychrest. Its most prominent action seems to be on the stomach and bowels. Many of its symptoms spread from this central point of attack.

For instance, we will find that it has mental symptoms pointing quite plainly to hypochondriasis. We find the patient depressed and exceedingly irritable. This is especially noticed after a meal, particularly after dinner, which is usually the heaviest meal. The degree of hypochondriasis seems to be measured by the stage of digestion. Just as food passes out of the stomach into the duodenum, this hypochondriacal mood lessens, and continues to do so as the food gets further down into the bowels. You will find such a patient decidedly averse to society, even to his own family. The indigestion is more marked after a vegetable diet, particularly starchy foods. The indigestion is accompanied by sour eructations, water-brash and by retching in the morning, with spasmodic contraction of both oesophagus and stomach, with little or nothing coming to the mouth and, perhaps, copious salivation. The abdomen is hard and swollen, especially so after eating. There is accumulation of flatus in the abdomen, and this, when passed, is noticed to be foetid. There is a sort of griping colic just after a meal. The stool is difficult to expel, although not especially hard, just as we found in Hepar last week, and as we find still more marked in Sepia, which, by the way, is complementary to Natrum carb. At other times, the patient suffers from diarrhoea. The stool is papescent or watery, with violent urging. This characteristic of the soda salts, you will find to be quite general. You find it also in Natrum sulph. It seems to be due to the purgative effect of the soda itself. Wine in such cases as this causes faintness and vertigo, not agreeing with the patient at all.

In these gastric and nervous symptoms we find the nearest analogue to Natrum carb. in Sepia, which, as I have mentioned a few moments ago, is also its complement. We find in both remedies this aversion to society and indifference to one's own family. We find, too, that both remedies have sour eructations and the formation of foetid gas in the abdomen. I remember curing a case of dyspepsia with Sepia, in which there were very few gastric symptoms, nothing more than a feeling of discomfort, but the mental symptoms were prominent and always ushered in an attack of indigestion. The patient, a lady, became indifferent to her business affairs and also to her friends. She became excessively irritable. She would hardly tolerate even a civil question addressed to her. Sepia entirely cured this patient after she had been six or seven years under allopathic treatment. This shows you how the mental symptoms of Sepia come in, to enable you to decide for it as the remedy. Natrum carb. has almost precisely the same class of symptoms. It may not be so often indicated, but nevertheless, it comes in to supplement Sepia when the general symptoms are those of Soda rather than those of the former remedy. Natrum carb. has rather distension of the abdomen, with fulness and hardness, like all alkalies, while Sepia has more goneness and empty, sinking feeling, which food does not fill up, except, perhaps, at supper. Natrtim carb. has one exception to the fulness of the abdomen, and that is, at ten or eleven o'clock in the morning the patient feels anxious and weak, very much as you find under Iodine, but eating relieves this and produces distension.

Then, again, you should remember Natrum carb. in connection with Nux vomica. Both remedies have this retching in the morning. This symptom is strongest, however, in Nux vomica. You are often called upon to give Nux vomica when it occurs in pregnant women, or after a debauch, etc. Then, too, you find Natrum carb. parallel with Nux vomica in this hypochondriasis. You must compare the two remedies carefully before you decide which you will give.

We shall see, too, that Natrum mur. will have to be compared with Nattum carb. It is necessary to distinguish between the two because they are both soda salts.

Evidence of the effect of Natrum carb. on the nervous system is shown by the electric changes in the atmosphere. Thus, we find it causing nervousness or anxiety, which is worse during a thunder-storm. These symptoms occur independently of the timidity which belongs to some people during thunder-storms, at which times they secrete themselves in the cellar, etc. They are due to the direct effect of the electric changes in the atmosphere on the nervous system, precisely as we find in other remedies, notably in Phosphorus, Rhododendron, Silicea, Bryonia, Natrum muriaticum, Nitric acid and Petroleum. So nervous and restless may the Natrum carb. patients become, that playing on the piano makes them worse and aggravates their complaints. It is not only the music that has this effect, but the efforts they use and the position they take. This is a common symptom in hysterical women. They get very nervous from playing on the piano or from hearing music.

Another property of Natrum carb. is its use in ill-effects of summer weather; this is common to all the soda salts. We find Natrum carb. indicated when there is a great deal of debility caused by the heat of summer, particularly when the patient is subject to chronic headaches, which are worse every time he exposes himself to the heat of - the sun. Natrum carb. is particularly called for in the chronic effects of sunstroke. It may have been years past that the patient was overcome by the heat; and now, with the return of hot weather, he suffers from headaches.

Natrum carb. also weakens the nervous system in another direction. We find it exhibiting great debility, which is marked with every exertion on the part of the patient. His walk becomes unsteady; any little obstruction on the pavement causes him to fall. His ankles turn in when he attempts to walk. I have a patient, apparently in good health, who has had five falls within one year, and, for these accidents, I can find no reason. These are the cases that require a remedy, not for the effects of the fall, but to tone up the joints or muscles. Other remedies besides Natrum carb. having this weakness of the ankles in children are Sulphuric acid, Causticum, Natrum mur., Natrum hypochlorosum } Sulphur and, perhaps, Pinus sylvestris. I mention this last remedy with reserve, for while it has been highly recommended in our literature for weak legs, it has failed in a number of cases. Natrum hypochlorosum or Labarraque's liquid is not a pure salt, for it contains carbonate of soda and calx chlorinata or ordinary " chloride of lime." The indications for its use in uterine disease has already been given you in a former lecture. (Seepage 142.) It suits lax, flabby, indolent children who, in addition to weakness of the ankles, have curved spine with prominence of the scapulae and eczema on the scalp and behind the ears. They are subject to purulent otonhcea, aphthae, to scalding urine, to wetting the bed at night, and when asleep, they may have a ghastly look as if dead.

You will find that Natrum carb. will relieve soreness of the feet, and particularly the soles, accompanied by swelling of those parts. You may also use it for ulcers on or about the heels after a long walk. This symptom brings to mind a peculiar circumstance that I would like to mention. Certain remedies have an affinity for certain parts of the body. A soldier, who had been marching a great deal, had two ulcers, one on the heel, the other on the instep. Natrum carb. cured the one on the heel but not the one on the instep, which was afterwards cured by Lycopodium. Lycopodium acts on the instep and Natrum carb. on the heel. The same thing you note all over the body. There are drugs that act on the right tonsil and not at all on the left. You find some remedies which act on the great toe and not at all on the others.

On mucous membranes, too, we find Natrum carb., exerting considerable influence. The crude drug has been known to produce in workmen engaged in its manufacture small ulcers on the cornea. Given internally, it has cured small corneal ulcers or phlyctenules, with great photophobia and stinging pains; particularly are these symptoms marked in scrofulous children.

The catarrhs curable by Natrum carb. are not commonly met with, but when they do occur, there is no drug that can take its place. The coryza is fluent, and is provoked by the least draught of air, and seems to have a periodical aggravation every other day. It is entirely relieved by sweating. Chronic cases of nasal catarrh or ozsena, even call for Natrum carb. when we find thick yellowish-green discharge from the nose, or hard foetid lumps. The tip of the nose is red, the skin peels off. You find not infrequently, when Natrum carb. is indicated, that there will be accumulation of mucus in the posterior nares, or in the throat, in the morning, causing "hemming" and hawking until it is raised. This is a very common symptom in all the alkalies. The cough seems to have its aggravation whenever the patient enters a warm room, and is attended with purulent green sputum of a salty taste. Among other remedies which have this cough worse in a warm room, Bryonia stands foremost. Coccus cacti has it in almost equal degree.

Natrum carb., as I have already told you, is often used in the treatment of eczema. It seems to have a particular affinity for the dorsa of the hands. The skin then becomes rough, dry and chapped. Here, again, you find Sepia closely related with Natrum carb. , being particularly indicated for this form of eruption when there are little ulcers about the joints of the hands. Natrum carb. also cures herpetic eruptions in yellow rings.

On the genital organs, Natrum carb. has some effect. Particularly do we find it indicated in diseases of females when there is pressure across the hypogastrium as if something were being pushed out. If you make an examination in these cases, you will find the os uteri indurated and misshapen. There is considerable congestion of a passive kind in the uterus, causing pulsation there during and after coitus. The extra influx of blood caused by sexual erethism brings about this pulsation. The leucorrhcea which Natrum carb. causes is thick and yellow, and sometimes has a putrid odor, and ceases after urinating.

There is another use you may make of Natrum carb., and that is when labor pains are weak and cause a great deal of anguish, tremor and perspiration with every pain, and are relieved lyy gentle rubbing, which by the way is a general characteristic.

We also find Natrum carb. to be one of the remedies useful for expelling moles or the products of a false conception.

Unable to think; difficult, slow comprehension. Mental weakness and depression; worries; very sensitive to noise; colds, change of weather. Anxious and restless during thunderstorm; worse from music (Ambra). Marked gayety. Sensitive to presence of certain individuals.

Carbonate of Sodium All the Natrums stimulate cellular activity and increase oxidation and metabolish. Great debility caused by summer heat; chronic effects of sunstroke; exhaustion; anæmic; milky, watery skin; very weak ankles, are all peculiar Natrum carbonicum conditions.

Worse, sitting, from music, summer heat, mental exertion, thunderstorm. Least draught, changes of weather, sun. Better, by moving, by boring in ears and nose.

Aches from slightest mental exertion, worse from sun or working under gas-light (Glon) Feels too large. Oversensitive of hearing. Head aches with return of hot weather. Vertigo from exposure to sun.

Freckles, yellow spots, pimples. Swelling of upper lip. Pale, with blue rings around eyes and swollen lids.

All troubles of external nose which may attain a morbid size-pimples and puffiness. Constant coryza; obstruction of nose. Catarrh; bad smell of nasal secretion. Many troubles of external nose (Caust). Posterior nasal catarrh. Hawking much mucus from throat; worse, slightest draught.

Feels swollen and sensitive. Ill effects of drinking cold water when overheated. Water-brash. Hungry at 5 am. Very weak digestion, caused by slightest error of diet. Averse to milk. Depressed after eating. Bitter taste. Old dyspeptics, always belching, have sour stomach and rheumatism. Dyspepsia relieved by soda biscuits. Bowels.––Sudden call to stool. Escapes with haste and noise. Yellow substance like pulp of orange in discharge. Diarrhœa from milk.

Induration of cervix. Pudenda sore. Bearing-down sensation (Sep; Murex). Heaviness; worse, sitting; better by moving. Menses late, scanty like meat-washings (Nitric ac). Leucorrhœal discharge, offensive, irritating preceded by colic.

Dry cough, when coming into warm room from out of doors. Cough with coldness of left side of breast.

Old sprains. Great weakness of limbs, especially in morning. Easy dislocation and spraining of ankles. Foot bends under (Caust). Soreness between toes and fingers. Heel and tendo-Achilles affected. Capped hands. The hollow of the knee is painful on motion. Icy cold up to knees.

Inclination to perspire easily, or dry, rough, cracked skin. Eruption on finger-tips, knuckles and toes. Vesicular eruption in patches and circles. Veins full. Soles of feet raw and sore.

Wakes too early in morning. Amorous dreams. Drowsy during day.

Compare: Sodii bicarbonas (in vomiting of pregnancy with acetonuria, 30 grains in water spread over twenty-four hours); Nat sulph; Caust; Natr cacodyl (Foul breath and mouth with bad odor. Dry dermatitis of the skin of abdomen. Malignant growths. In phthisis, 5 centigrammes hypodermically, daily. Increase number of red blood corpuscles to double. Also in malignant disease). Arsynal––(Disodium methylarsenate). Introduced by M. A. Gautier, for phthisis in the second stage 4 to 6 centigrammes per day for one week followed by a week's intermission. But much smaller doses, i.e, 1x to 3x are followed by improvement, lessened fever, night sweat and hæmoptysis ceasing. Antidote: Ars. Camph.

Sixth potency.

Natrum Carbonicum

Proved by Hahnemann, Hering and others. Persons who are in the habit of taking carbonate of soda for sour stomach get a proving of this remedy. I have met some of these people and been able to confirm many Natrum symptoms. Old dyspeptics who are always belching and have sour stomach and rheumatism; after twenty years they are stoop-shouldered, pale, sensitive to cold, chilly, aggravated by the least draft; require much clothing; unable to resist the cold or the heat; require a medium climate; are worse from the changes of the weather; their digestive, rheumatic, and gouty troubles are all worse from the weather changes.

Mind: A state of trepidation from the slightest noise, the slam of a door; nervous excitement and palpitation with great prostration; nervous weakness with trepidation; weakness from slight exertion of mind or body; internal and external trembling.

The rattling of paper causes palpitation, irritability and melancholy. Estrangement from family and friends. Aversion to mankind and to society; to relatives, to strangers; feels a great division between himself and them; sensitive to, certain persons.

Music causes a tendency to suicide, melancholy, weeping and trepidation; playing the piano is so exhausting that she must lie down; music causes great sadness which increases to religious insanity.

This is true of all the Sodiums, but especially so of Natrum carb.; aggravation from the slam of a door, a pistol shot, which causes headache and complaints in general, aggravated from music.

Digestion: The more soda these patients take, the more flatulent do they become; they are stoop-shouldered; digestion is difficult, and finally milk will not digest at all, bringing on a diarrhoea with undigested, lienteric stools; also, starch causes flatulence and looseness of the bowels, Many symptoms from drinking cold water when overheated.

Urine offensive like that of a horse, from a vegetable or milk diet. This is not so marked as in Nitric ac., but resembles it.

Skin: Natrum carb. throws out eruptions upon the knuckles and fingertips; also the toes; vesicular eruptions open up and form ulcers on the joints of finger-tips.

Borax, Sepia, Ars., and Natrum carb. are the remedies most inclined to produce ulceration of the tips and knuckles of the fingers, and also the toes.

Vesicular eruptions on the body in patches and circles; the herpes family is especially, related to Natr. carb.; zona, herpes labialis, herpes preputialis; patches as large as a dollar on the hips, thighs and back. Smaller patches show vesicles containing a white serum, burning, smarting and itching, better from scratching. The eruption passes away with a crust, but will often ulcerate, it does not heal and an ulcer forms. Circulation feeble; wounds suppurate. Feet and skin burn. Crusty eruptions on the skin that have not been vesicular; but most Natr. carb. and Natr. mur. eruptions are of the vesicular form. Tingling, biting, itching, changing place, now here and now there; cold skin; sweaty body.

Mind: Nervous exhaustion, physical exhaustion, weakness of mind and body.

Book-keepers lose the ability to add up figures. In reading a page, the one previous to, it soon goes out of the mind. The memory will not hold out from the beginning to the end of a sentence. Forgets what he reads.

Confusion of mind follows and then he is unable, to perform any mental labor. Men become so fatigued from the details of business that a confusion of the mind comes over them, they get brain fag.

Oversensitive to heat, especially after sunstroke, even some years after; has to be well shaded when walking in the sun, must seek a cool or dark place the patient has not had the proper acute remedy during the attack the remedy is aggravated by both cold and heat, but this is a special aggravation from the heat of the sun; head troubles are not worse from cold in Natr. carb.

Old cases of brain fag with weakness and trepidation. The body troubles are aggravated from cold and in the winter; as cold as if he had no blood in the body, extremities cold, and he cannot get them warm; cold as ice to, the knees and elbows.

The body and extremities are worse in winter, the head in summer.

Anxious trembling and sweating during pains. The senses are all disturbed; oversensitive to light pain in the eyes from a bright light. Oversensitive hearing; little noises seem enormous, like thunder; the crumpling of paper seems like the crashing of a waterfall. Taste perverted, too sensitive, so that the tasting of things ordinarily grateful becomes painful; sometimes loss of taste.

Loss of smell. Hay fever, catarrhal fever; where catarrhal conditions are present there is copious, thick, yellow, purulent discharge from the eyes, nose, vagina.

The vesicles are filled with thin, white serum, but the pustule, when it ruptures, throws out a thick, yellow discharge. Leucorrhoea thick, yellow, ropy; gonorrhea of the same character; thick, yellow, ropy, purulent discharge from the bladder which clogs up the urethra when urinating. Otalgia, with sharp, darting, piercing pains when the mental state, the chilliness and other generals are present. The discharges are commonly offensive.

Coryzas trouble much; always has a cold in the head the watery discharge is of short duration and is soon followed by a thick copious flow of yellow mucus.

Ulceration, thick crusts; sleeps at night with the month open; dry, yellow crusts are blown out with pain and bleeding. The catarrh increases with each fresh cold, until it becomes foetid; the bones of the nose are affected; almost a constant headache over the eyes, in the forehead, at the root of the nose; congestive headaches, worse from change of weather, cold room, damp weather; increased by every storm. Most foetid ozoena, mucous membranes ulcerated and destroyed.

Pale face with blue ring around the eyes, yellow blotches on the forehead, puffiness. There is puffiness in general; the hands, feet, face pit on pressure; infiltration of the cellular tissue; those states of the heart and kidneys that favor dropsies; old malarial cases, flesh doughy; urine albuminous.

Enlargement of the glands with induration, axillary, inguinal, abdominal, salivary. Especially suitable for enlargement of the prostate in old men. Chronic enlargement of the parotids, slow and of long duration; of the tonsils.

Ulcerations of the mouth; nursing sore month in women; thrush in infants; little white aphthous patches, especially in nervous, withered infants who cannot stand any kind of milk, who have diarrhoea from milk; they thrive better on cereals; when asleep the child jumps, cries, springs up and grasps the mother; a nervous, cold baby, easily startled like the Borax baby. So are the Natrum babies in general.

Accumulation of mucus in the throat and posterior nares, generally yellow in color, while with Natr. mur. it is white; the latter spits up copious, thick, white mouthfuls.

Natr. carb. is ameliorated by eating; when chilly, he eats and is able to keep warm; the pains are ameliorated after eating; he has an all gone feeling and pain in the stomach which drives him to eat; he gets hungry at 5 A.M. and 11 P.M. 5 A.M. is the favorite time for the Natr. carb. aggravation; he becomes so hungry at this time that he is forced out of bed to eat something, which also ameliorates the pain.

Headache, chilliness, and palpitation better from eating (Ignat., Sepia, Sulph.).

Nervous hunger in pregnant women, who cannot sleep unless they get up at night and eat crackers, calls for Psorinum.

Locomotor ataxia with its fulgurating pains, amel. by eating; gnawing, all-gone, hungry feeling in the stomach. Soles numb, in males erections and priapism, sensitive thighs, hypersensitive spine; the results of too much excitement.

Emissions; ejaculation of semen premature. Thirst in the afternoon, incessant; thirst between chill and heat great desire for cold water a few hours after dinner. Extreme aversion to milk. Flatulency and accumulation of wind in the bowels; diarrhoea; stool yellow, soft with violent tenesmus and urging; a yellow substance like the pulp of an orange in the stool; diarrhoea from milk.

The most troublesome constipation; stool hard, dark, smooth and crumbling. All the Natrums take away the desire to go to stool; no ability to bear down; stool large and hard, great effort to pass it.

Prostatorrhoea after urinating and a difficult stool.

Sterility, a constitutional state in a woman where she is unable to, conceive; she is nervous, cold to the knees and elbows; cold body in winter, hot head in summer; always tired; relaxation of the sphincter vaginae causing the seminal fluid to gush out as soon as ejaculated by the male, thus causing sterility.

There may be a spasm of the sphincter, producing the same effect, or a clot of blood or mucus shoots from the vagina with noisy flatus. Nervous, fidgety, excitable, lean, dyspeptic women, not hysterical. Menses too soon or too late; neuralgias, oversensitive to drafts and dampness, sensitive spine, legs numb; leucorrhea yellowish-green, copious.
