Narcotic effects and dryness. Little pain. OVERPOWERING DROWSINESS, with or caused by almost every condition; by day; < exertion; during menses; when flatulent; with dryness, yet NO THIRST; with coldness. Fleeting pains. Heaviness; of eyes, tongue, etc. Dark, heamorrhages. Scrawny women, who faint easily; < at stool or menses; laugh or cry by turns; have small breasts, etc. As of hard lumps in stomach, liver, throat, etc. Hysteria. Automatism. .................... Dreamy, clairvoyant state. Dazed; objects seem changed or to grow larger. Slow ideation. Thoughts suddenly vanish. Uses wrong words. Brain exhaustion. Talks loud. Mockery. Laughing. Jesting. Vertigo. Sense of levitation. Headache; in temples; > hard pressure. Cerebral congestion. Pale face. Retracted lips. Teeth feel pulled. Dry mouth and throat, without thirst; < sleep. Tongue sticks to palate. Thick, cottony saliva. Chalky taste. Loathing, when eating or thinking of food. Weak digestion. Enormous bloating; all food turns to gas. Flatulent colic. As of a board across hypogastrium. Stool difficult, although soft; putrid, bright yellow and lienteric; < night. Inactive rectum. Strangury from alcohol. Thick, dark, irregular menses. Flatus from vagina. Leucorrhœa; replaces menses. Deficient, irregular labor pains. Cough, > heat of bed. Hoarse; when walking against wind. Palpitation, > walking. Acute pain now in spine, now in lumbar region. Dry palms. Dry, cold skin. Sleepy attacks. Sudden; with vertigo. Weak, irregular pulse. Alternate chill and heat. Chills with sopor. Red sweat, or sweat absent.

This is a singular state of the mind sometimes found in hysterical women. Sometimes it is impossible to find out what state of the mind is present she is so forgetful. She lies with the eyes closed and yet knows everything that is going on, but remembers nothing. She speaks with intelligence about the things of the moment, but knows nothing of the past. She prophesies, predicts with a sort of clairvoyance. The mental state is the keynote. Sometimes she is < in the morning, sometimes in the evening, or on waking. She performs all her duties and yet seems to be in a dream, she seems not to know her friends.

Adapted especially to women and children of a nervous hysterical temperament (Ign.); to people with a dry skin, who rarely perspire; complaints of pregnancy. Weakness of old age; dyspepsia of old people. Oversensitive: To light; of hearing; of smell; to touch. All the ailments are accompanied by drowsiness and sleepiness (Ant-t., Op.) or an inclination of faint even from slight pain (Hep.); complaints cause sleepiness. Stupor and insensibility; unconquerable sleep. Great soreness of all the parts upon which one lies (Bapt., Pyrog.); tendency to bedsores. Sleep: Irresistibly drowsy; sleepy, muddled, as if intoxicated; coma, lies silent, immovable; eyes constantly closed (with stertorous breathing, Op.). Fatigue, must lie down after the least exertion. Rheumatic affections; from getting feet wet; from exposure to drafts of air while heated (Acon., Bry.); < in cold, wet weather, or cold wet clothes (Rhus-t.); of left shoulder (Ferr.).

(Nutmeg) Of nutmeg, Kent says : “ A little remedy, but, when needed, nothing will take its place.” It so happens that one has come across this remedy several times, in rather dramatic circumstances, and has witnessed its rapid and wonderful action. Therefore it is a drug one is greatly tempted to write about—probably little known—one of those remedies that will never ” work out ” unless one takes only its own peculiar symptoms—which are entirely distinctive. A First Experience Many years ago, in a state of greatest anxiety in regard to a patient of 80, with cerebral thrombosis, paralysed and comatose for nine weeks, where the coma had become so deep that it was almost impossible to get a mouthful of anything down, one went off late at night to ask advice of a certain homoeopathic doctor in the south of London. Absolutely the right man to go to ! for he had a curious tale to tell. He had himself had bouts of indifference and automatic conduct after rather frequent attacks of influenza (and influenza was severe in those days !) in such sort that he would carry his letters about for days unopened ; took interest in nothing, and was pretty useless to his patients, who nevertheless trusted him greatly, and made allowance for his post-influenzal state, and waited for it to lift. It was Nux mosch, that had proved the magic remedy and restored him to usefulness. He was therefore able to point out its ” virtues ” and its applicability to the case in point. And it worked—just a dose of the 200 (so far as one remembers) and all anxiety in regard to the patient was at an end.
