Strontium carbonicum

Congestive tension. Fleeting pains; seemingly in bones. Rheumatism. Burning. Gnawing. Pains increase and decrease gradually or make him faint and sick all over. Violent starts. Immobility; of one side. Œdema. Sense of paralytic weakness. Emaciation. Prostration after operations. Formication in limbs. Arterio-sclerosis. .................... Headaches; into upper jaw; with vertigo and nausea. Violent pain in nape, > wraps. Very pale or violently red face. Numb mouth. Pressure in stomach during digestion. Cramp about navel. Hard, knotty, difficult stool, then burning at anus. Exhausting, nightly diarrhœa, of yellow water; periodically. Pale, ammoniacal urine. As of a load on chest. Heart feels smothered. Heart block. Numb hands. Sprained or puffed ankles. Cramp in calves and soles. Surgical shock. Flushes of heat; in face; yet averse to uncovering. Night-sweats; climacteric.

STRONTIANA CARBONICA.

Strontiana carbonica has a few symptoms that are of importance. It has more effect on the circulation than has its relative, Baryta. We have, as a characteristic, flushes in the face and violent pulsation of the arteries. It may be useful in case of threatening apoplexy with violent congestion of the head, and hot and red face every time the patient walks. Mere exertion increases the circulation upwards towards the head. Some erethism is shown in the chest in some patients. There is a smothering feeling about the heart; they cannot rest; there is a feeling as of a load on the chest. These are the congestive symptoms of the heart, lungs and head which suggest Strontiana card., and they may occur at the time of the climaxis when flushes of heat are so common. The peculiarity which will distinguish these symptoms from those of any other remedy is, that the head symptoms are relieved by wrapping the head up warmly, just as you find under Silicea and under Magnesia mur. These patients cannot bear the least draught of air, therefore, despite this congestive tendency, they wrap the head up warmly, though it may cause perspiration. It certainly does resemble Silicea, in that both remedies have congestion of the head relieved by wrapping the head up warmly. The Silicea congestion seems to come up the spine and go into the head. That is not characteristic of Strontiana carb.

Another effect that we find caused by Strontiana carb., and one, too, for which it is not often used, is diarrhoea, which is worse at night, and which has this peculiar urgent character: the patient is scarcely off the vessel before he has to return. It is better towards morning at three or four o'clock.

Strontiana carb. has a marked action on the bones. It has a particular affinity for the femur, causing swelling and caries of that bone; usually in scrofulous children. This trouble is often associated with the diarrhoea just described.

Strontiana carb. causes an eruption which very much resembles that of sycosis. Hence, it has been given for a sycotic eruption on the face or other parts of the body, and which is moist, and itches and burns.

Another peculiarity of the drug, and the last one I care to mention, is its effects in chronic sprains, particularly of the ankle-joint, when both Arnica and Ruta have failed. The long interference with the circulation has produced some oedema about the joint.

Carbonate of Strontia Strontia Rheumatic pains, chronic sprains, stenosis of œsophagus. Pains make patient faint or sick all over. Chronic sequelæ of hæmorrhages, after operations with much oozing of blood and coldness and prostration. Arterio-sclerosis. High blood pressure with flushed face pulsating arteries, threatened apoplexy. Violent

involuntary starts. Affections of bones, especially femur. Restlessness at night, smothering feeling. For shock after surgical operations. Neuritis, great sensitiveness to cold.

Better immersing in hot water; worse, change of weather; from being quiet; when beginning to move; great sensitiveness to cold.

Vertigo with headache and nausea. Distensive pressure. Aches from nape of neck, spreading upwards; better wrapping head up warmly (Sil). Flushes in face; violent pulsating. Supraorbital neuralgia; pains increase and decrease slowly (Stann). Bloody crusts in nose. Face red; burns, itches. Itching, redness and burning of nose.

Burning and redness of eyes. Pain and lachrymation on using eyes, with dancing and chromatic alterations of objects looked at.

Loss of appetite, aversion to meat, craves bread and beer. Food tasteless. Eructations after eating. Hiccough causes chest pains; cardialgia.

Sticking in abdominal ring. Diarrhœa; worse at night; continuous urging; better towards morning. Burning in anus lasts a long time after stool (Ratanh). Uncomfortable fullness and swelling of abdomen.

Sciatica with œdema of ankle. Rheumatic pain in right shoulder. Rheumatism with diarrhœa. Gnawing as if in marrow of bones. Cramps in calves and soles. Chronic spasms, particularly of ankle-joint. Œdematous swelling. Icy- cold feet. Rheumatic pains, especially in joints. Veins of hands engorged.

Moist, itching, burning eruption; better in open air, especially warm sunshine. Sprains of ankle-joint, with œdema. Violent perspiration at night.

Heat, with aversion to uncover or undress.

Compare: Arnica; Ruta; Sil; Baryta c; Carbo; Stront jodat (arterio- sclerosis). Strontium brom (often gives excellent results where a bromide is indicated. Vomiting of pregnancy. Nervous dyspepsia. It is anti-fermentative and neutralizes excessive acidity). Stront nit (Morbid cravings; headache and eczema behind ears).

Sixth trituration and thirtieth potency.
