Active metabolism. Rapid growth. Insidious onset, gradually increasing debility, ending in severe or rapid disease (Tarn.). Recurring effects, colds, croup, bleedings, etc. HÆMORRHAGE; vicarious; blood-streaked discharges of ulcers, etc. Decomposition. Polypi. Symptoms due to heart and lung affections. Tall, gracile, nervous and delicate. Phthisical habit. Acidosis. Weak spells; in joints; < exertion. Emptiness; in chest, stomach, etc. Acute senses. Erethistic exhaustion. Vertex throbs. Dandruff. Bald spots. Lachrymation, in wind. Vision; flashes; halos; red; green; black; > shade; narrow fields of; colored, then migraine. Choroiditis. Retinitis albuminurica. Glaucoma. Ears; echoes or reverberations in; deaf to human voice. Otitis; media. Mastoiditis. Nose; nervous motion of alæ; coryza, flows and stops; on alternate sides; swelled; caries; ulcer, etc. Epistaxis; of youths; then pneumonia; with cough, etc. Sneezing; < odors, smoke, etc. with dyspnœa. Descending nose colds. Sensitive smell. Pale about nose and mouth. Changing, sickly face; hollow eyes, with blue rings. Numb teeth. Gum sore behind central incisors. Palate itches. Abscess of hard palate. Sour taste and eructations. As of cotton or something hanging in throat. CRAVES COLD DRINKS WHICH >, but are VOMITED IN A LITTLE WHILE; after chloroform. Regurgitates ingesta.

"Mental enfeeblement" is the thought that will come into the mind when considering what the Phosphoric acid patient says, does and looks. The mind seems tired. When questioned he answers slowly or does not speak, but only looks at the questioner. He is too tired to talk or even think. He says: "Don't talk to me; let me alone." This state is found in both acute and chronic diseases. He is so tired in mind, perfectly exhausted. In chronic diseases when brought on from long study; prolonged worry in business men; in feeble school girls, when become relaxed from very little effort. In acute diseases he, especially in typhoid fever, is averse to speaking or answering questions. He merely looks. Finally he rouses up and says: "Don't talk to me, I am so tired." He cannot think what he wishes to say, cannot frame his answers to questions. Another cause is sexual excesses in young men, or in those guilty of secret vice. Weakness; lack of reaction; state of stupor, with impotency; mental prostration, and as if the spine had given out. In every case we find the mental symptoms are the first to develop. The remedy runs from the mental to the physical, from the brain to the muscles. This is so striking that it is contrasted with Muriaticum acid. in the latter remedy the muscular prostration comes first, and the mind seems clear until long after the muscles are prostrated. In Phosphoric acid the muscles seem strong after the mind has given out. The patient seems vigorous physically. He says he is all right physically, can work, can exercise even violently; but the mind is tired, there is mental apathy, he can not add up a column of figures, can not read the newspaper and carry the trend of thought, can not connect circumstances.

Adapted to tall slender persons of sanguine temperament, fair skin, delicate eyelashes, fine blond, or red hair, quick perceptions, and very sensitive nature. Young people who grow too rapidly, are inclined to stoop (to walk stooped, Sulph.); who are chlorotic or anemia; old people, with morning diarrhea. Mental Genenerals Nervous, weak; desires to be magnetised (Sil.). Apathetic; unwilling to talk; answers slowly; moves sluggishly (Ph-ac.). Weary of life, full of gloomy forebodings. Oversensitiveness of all the senses to external impressions, light, noise, odors, touch. Burning: In spots along the spine; between the scapulae (as of a piece of ice, Lachn.); or intense heat running up the back; of palms of hands (Lach.); in chest and lungs; of every organ or tissue of the body (Ars., Sulph.); generally in diseases of nervous system. Hemorrhage: Frequent and profuse, pouring out freely and then ceasing for a time; metrorrhagia, in cancer, hemoptysis vicarious, from nose, stomach, anus, urethra, in amenorrhea. Hemorrhage diathesis; small wounds bleed profusely (Kreos., Lach.); from every mucous outlet. Restless, fidgety; moves continually, cannot sit or stand still a moment (restless, fidgety feet, Zinc.). Great weakness and prostration; with nervous debility and trembling; of whole body; weakness and weariness from loss of vital fluids (Chin., Ph- ac.). A weak, empty, all-gone sensation in head, chest, stomach and entire abdomen. Longs for: Cold food and drink; juicy refreshing things; ice cream > gastric pains. Perspiration has the odor of sulphur.

Groupings of symptoms with contrasts and likenesses are a great helps to rapid and correct prescribing. Hahnemann tells us in regard to Phosphorus that it acts most beneficially in persons who suffer from chronic loose stools and diarrhoea. He also draws attention to the favourable reaction of the Phos. patient to mesmerism. Phos. is one of the drugs that loves to be rubbed. Hahnemann also uses Phosphorus to prove that potentized medicines “ are no longer subject to chemical laws ”. We all know that phosphorus when exposed to air oxidizes : that indeed when dissolved in disulphide of carbon, and deposited in finest subdivision as the latter evaporates, it spontaneously combusts. This is supposed by some to have been the ancient “ Greek fire ” , used for incendiary purposes, and more recently, one imagines, by militant suffragettes, when, to annoy, they burnt the letters in pillar boxes. And yet, as Hahnemann points out, a powder of Phos. in highest potency may remain for years in its paper in a desk, without losing its medicinal properties, or even changing them for those of Phosphoric acid. He gives other instances also to show that “ A remedy which has been elevated to the highest potency . . . is no longer subject to the laws of neutralization.” If this were not the case how could we carry about our little phials of medicated globules, secure in the know ledge that they would not interfere with one another, or neutralize one another, but would be always ready for use, and never fail us—provided they were correctly prescribed. Most of the complaints are ameliorated from keeping warm, from absolute quiet, from being alone at peace. There is aggravation of the complaints from exertion, mental or physical, from being talked to. Morning headaches. He must lie down with the headaches. Headache aggravated from being talked to. He is sensitive to cold weather. He is sensitive to a warm room. In the headache the pain often begins in the back of the head and spreads to the top of the load; feels as if a crushing weight were on the top of the head; worse from motion, talking and light. "Pressure as from a weight in head from above downward." These headaches are associated with mental weakness, brain-fag; so tired and exhausted. Vertigo with ringing in the ears and glassy eyes. Its use in low fevers must be studied. The complaints come on slowly, slow decline, slowly increasing prostration. Such appearances as are found in advanced typhoid.
