Terebinthina

Oil of Turpentine. A Volatile Oil.

The urine has the odor of violets.

Tongue: smooth, glossy, red, as if deprived of papillae, or as if glazed (Pyr.) ; elevated papillae; coating peels off in patches leaving bright red spots, or entire coating cleans off suddenly (in exanthemata) ; dry and red; burning in tip (compare, Mur. ac.).

Abdomen : extremely sensitive to touch ; distension, flatulence, excessive tympanitis; meteorism (Colch.).

Diarrhoea : stool, watery, greenish, mucous ; frequent, profuse, fetid, bloody; burning in anus and rectum, fainting and exhaustion, after (Ars.).

Worms: with foul breath, choking (Cina, Spig.) ; dry, hacking cough; tickling at anus; ascarides, lumbrici, tapeworm segments passed.

H?ematuria : blood thoroughly mixed with the urine; sediment, like coffee-grounds; cloudy, smoky, albuminous; profuse, dark or black, painless.

Congestion and inflammation of viscera; kidneys, bladder, lungs, intestines, uterus; with haemorrhage, and malignant tendency.

Purpura haemof rhagica ; fresh ecchymoses in great numbers from day to day (Sulph. ac.).

Ascites with anasarca, ip organic lesions of kidneys ; dropsy after scarlatina (Apis, Hell., Lach.).

Haemorrhages; from bowels, with ulceration; passive, dark with ulceration or epithelial degeneration.

Violent burning and drazving pains in kidney, bladder and urethra (Berb., Can., Canth.).

Terebinthina.

Terebinthina, or turpentine, is a drug which has been much abused by old-school physicians, and has therefore been greatly neglected by homoeopaths. In the revulsion from the misconceptions of the oldschool physicians, we often avoid a drug altogether. All that I have time to say concerning Terebinthina is that its main action is on the kidneys and bladder. When you find metritis, peritonitis, pneumonia, hydrocephalus, typhoid fever, scarlatina, or, in fact, any serious disease of low type, with the following renal symptoms, Terebinthina comes in as your remedy: dull pains in the region of the kidneys; burning in the kidneys; pains extending from the kidneys down through the ureters; burning during micturition; strangury and albuminous urine. The urine is characteristically dark, cloudy and smokylooking, as though it contained decomposed blood, which in fact it does. It also has the odor of violets like Cantharis, Copaiva, Osmium and Selenium. The real pathological condition of the kidneys in these cases is not one of acute Bright' s disease, nor one of croupous formation in the kidneys, but one of renal congestion, with oozing of blood into the pelvis of the kidney. The condition is not infrequently the result of living in damp dwellings. When the above urinary symptoms are present, you may give Terebinthina with confidence, no matter what the patient's disease may be.

Other symptoms characterizing these low states are feeble heart in pneumonia; intense burning in the uterus in metritis with typhoidal symptoms; burning in peritonitis; and tympany from paresis of the bowels.

Terebinthina often acts powerfully on mucous membranes. It produces burning in the air-passages, with thin expectoration, very difficult of detachment. It also is occasionally of use in humid asthma with the urinary concomitants of the drug.

Worms have been removed by Terebinthina. The child starts and screams out in sleep; picks at its nose; has a choking sensation and a dry, hacking cough; there may even be convulsions.

Alcohol favors the action of Terebinthina.

Has a selective affinity for bleeding mucous surfaces. Tympanites and urinary symptoms very marked. Inflammation of kidneys, with hæmorrhages-dark, passive, fetid. Bright's disease preceded by dropsy (Goullon). Drowsiness and strangury. Coma. Unbroken chilblains.

Dull pain like from a band around the head (Carb ac). Vertigo, with vanishing of vision. Disturbed sense of equilibrium. Tired and difficult concentration of thoughts. Cold in head with sore nostrils with disposition to bleed.

Ciliary neuralgia over right eye. Intense pain in eye and side of head. Amblyopia from alcohol.

Own voice sounds unnatural; humming as of a seashell, talking loudly is painful. Otalgia.

Tongue dry, red sore, shining; burning in tip, with prominent papillæ (Arg n; Bell; Kali b; Nux m). Breath cold, foul. Choking sensation in throat. Stomatitis. Dentition.

Nausea and vomiting; heat in epigastric region.

Enormous distention. Diarrhœa; stools watery, greenish, fetid, bloody. Pain before flatus with and relief after stool. Hæmorrhage from bowels. Worms; lumbrici. Abdominal dropsy; pelvic peritonitis. Fainting after every stool Entero-colitis, with hæmorrhage and ulceration of bowels.

Strangury, with bloody urine. Scanty, suppressed, odor of violets. Urethritis, with painful erections (Canthar). Inflamed kidneys following any acute disease. Constant tenesmus.

Intense burning in uterine region. Metritis; puerperal peritonitis. Metrorrhagia with burning in uterus.

Difficult breathing; lungs feel distended; hæmoptysis. Bloody expectoration.

Pulse rapid, small, thready, intermittent.

Burning pain in region of kidneys. Drawing in right kidney extending to hip.

Acne. Erythema; itching pustular, vesicular eruption; urticaria. Purpura, ecchymosis, dropsies. Scarlatina. Chilblains; with excessive itching and pulsative pains. Aching soreness of the muscles.

Heat, with violent thirst, dry tongue, profuse cold, clammy sweat. Typhoid with tympanites, hæmorrhages, stupor, delirium. Prostration.

tract. Loosens secretion, relieves tightened feeling, makes expectoration easy). Neurotic coughs. Huskiness of public speakers, and singers. Cystitis when urine is alkaline and offensive. Ononis spinosa-Rest Harrow––(Diuretic, Lithontriptic. Chronic nephritis; diuretic effects like Juniper; calculus nosebleed, worse washing face). Antidote: Phos.
