For the mental effects of onanism and sexual excesses.

Very sensitive to slightest mental impressions; least action or harmless word offends (Ign. ).

Great indignation about things done by others or by himself ; grieves about consequences.

Apathetic, indifferent, low-spirited, weak memory from sexual abuses (Anac., Aur., Nat., Phos. ac.).

Ailments from pride, envy or chagrin.

Ill-humored children cry for things which, after receiving, they petulantly push or throw away (Kreos.).

Was insulted; being too dignified to fight subdued his wrath and went home sick, trembling and exhausted (the rev. of Nux).

Sensation of a round ball in forehead sitting firmly there even when shaking the head.

Mechanical injuries from sharp-cutting instruments; post-surgical operations; stinging, smarting, pains, like the cutting of a knife.

For the bad effects of : onanism, sexual excesses.

loss of vital fluids; chagrin, mortification, unmerited insults; indignation, with vexation or reserved displeasure (Aur.).

Nervous weakness; as if done up after much hard work.

Styes, chalazcc on eyelids or upper lids, one after another, leaving hard nodosities in their wake (Con., Thuja).

Toothache: during menses; sound as well as decayed teeth; painful to touch of food or drink, but not from biting or chewing; < drawing cold air into mouth ; < from cold drinks and after eating.

Teeth turn black, show dark streaks through them; cannot be kept clean; crumble; decay on edges (at the roots, Mez., Thuja) ; scorbutic cachexia.

Craving for tobacco.

Extreme hunger even when stomach is full of food.

Sensation as if stomach and abdomen were hanging down relaxed (Agar., Ipec., Tab.).

Colic : after lithotomy or ovariotomy ; attending abdominal section (Bis., Hep.).

Urging to urinate, has to sit at urinal for hours ; in young married women; after coition; after difficult labor (Op.); burning in urethra when not urinating; urging and pain after urinating in prostatic troubles of old men; prolapse of bladder.

Painful sensitiveness of sexual organs, vulva so sensitive can scarcely wear a napkin (Plat.).

Onanism; persistently dwelling on sexual subjects; constantly thinking of sexual pleasures.

Similar to Nux vomica, Mercurius, Thuja, Cistus Canadensis, Colocynthis, Chamomilla.

Staphisagria is indicated in patients who appear pale, and are worn out and exhausted, especially as regards their nervous system. Both brain and spinal cord are weakened under its influence. The face is rather sunken, the nose is peaked and pointed, and the eyes are sunken and surrounded by blue rings. Mentally, the Staphisagria child is rather impetuous and irritable, reminding one strongly of Chamomilla; the adult Staphisagria patient is hypochondriacal. There may be one of several causes producing this last-named mental state. First, sexual excesses: it is called for in these hypochondriacal moods after self-abuse, and also when this mental state occurs in young men and young women as a result of permitting the mind to dwell too much on sexual subjects. Owing to his bad habit the boy becomes apathetic and gloomy, and has the complexion and sunken face that I have described. He rather prefers solitude, and is shy of the opposite sex. Locally, there is to be noted an irritability of the prostatic portion of the urethra. This state of affairs usually follows self-abuse; it is seldom the result of excessive sexual intercourse.

Platina was recommended by Grauvogl as a drug capable of curing spasms or convulsions, emaciation, and that train of symptoms which follows prepubic abuse of the sexual organs.

Still another remedy, Caladium, is to be thought of when, from masturbation, the glans penis is as flabby as a rag. The prepuce, when it is withdrawn behind the glans, remains there, not having contractility enough to replace itself. Nocturnal emissions occur either without dreams or with dreams that are foreign to sexual subjects. Other remedies indicated in this condition are Dioscorea, Gelsemium, and that well known group to which I have already referred in a previous lecture, Nux vomica^ Sulphur, Calcarea ostrearum and Lycopodium. Among the new remedies, Bromide of Potassium or Kali bromatum has been suggested. I have seen it do good when there was mental depression and weakness of the legs after self-abuse. In the female, in whom masturbation is not so common, we find ovarian symptoms resulting from the habit. Staphisagria becomes the remedy when these organs are in a state of irritability, especially in nervous excitable women. It ma}' also be used in women of this class when these symptoms occur in the prolonged absence of their husbands. When pruritus vulvae is also present, Caladium often helps. Staphisagria has another set of mental symptoms of a different t} 7pe from those just mentioned. The patient is easily excited to anger, sensitive to the least impression, and takes offence at every little meant or unmeant insult.

We find Staphisagria indicated in what I have already termed a mental colic; that is crampy pains in the abdomen following a fit of anger, just as we found present under Chamomilla and Colocynth. Chamomilla is called for in these cases when hot face, red cheeks and hot perspiration are associated with the colic; and Colocynth, when the severe pains cause the patient to double up for relief. Staphisagria is here complementary to Colocynth, stepping in to complete the cure when Colocynth is insufficient.

We find Staphisagria indicated also in diseases of the skin and of the bones. This drug has long been used as a local wash to destroy lice or vermin. You may use it internally when an eczematous eruption appears on the skin. This may occur on any other part of the body, but it is especially apt to be found on the head and face. The eruption is usually dry, and formed of very thick scabs, and itches violently, this last being an indication for the local application of Staphisagria. The peculiarity of this itching is that when scratching stops it in one place, it goes to another. At other times these scabs are moist, and are yellowish in color and very offensive, even breeding lice. Thus you see Staphisagria is suited to crusta lactea or eczema capitis.

Again this drug may be indicated in children who are weak and broken down as the result of a syphilitic or sycotic inheritance. In such children you almost always find the teeth decaying rapidly. The milk-teeth are scarcely full grown before they become black in creases or spots and crumble away. In this respect Staphisagria rivals Kreosote, which is one of the best remedies for premature decay of the milk-teeth, when they first become yellow, then dark and finally decay. In Thuja, as you will remember, the teeth decay at the edge of the gums.

Next to these remedies you may think of Antimonium crudum, and in other cases still, Chamomilla and Cojjea.

In the Staphisagria patient the gums are unhealthy, swollen, spongy and bleed easily when touched by food or by the finger, this condition being associated with painful swelling of the submaxillary glands. It is especially indicated after the abuse of Mercury.

Staphisagria is useful in children suffering from inflammation of the eyes, particularly of the lids with hardened styes.

For those little cystic tumors which form in the eyelids midway between the inner and outer surfaces, Graphites is the best remedy. Baryta carb. also cures tarsal tumors.

The Staphisagria children have an eczematous eruption composed of yellow scabs about the ears. The exudation from these is bloody and seems to cause rawness of the skin. Still further, we find Staphisagria affecting the bones. It causes swelling of the periosteum with subsequent suppuration.

It also produces fig-warts or condylomata on the skin; these are usually pediculated. This symptom places Staphisagria among the sycotic remedies. Thus we find it a suitable companion of Thuja, being preferable to that remedy when there are present the form of eruption already mentioned, the crumbling of the teeth and the pediculated condylomata.

In some cases we find it indicated in syphilitic ulceration after the abuse of Mercury, the discharge being thin and acrid. An examination with the probe reveals diseased bone beneath.

We have several remedies similar to Staphisagria in bone affections, whether of syphilitic or scrofulous origin. One of them is Stillingia. This is ,of great use in syphilitic affections of the long bones, such as the femur, tibia, humerus, etc., and in periosteitis or in osteitis, the pains being worse at night and in damp weather. In addition to this you almost alwa3 7s find an excoriating coryza, the well-known syphilitic ozaena.

Another remedy is Mercurius. Still another is Kali hydriodicum, especially when there is a combination of syphilis and mercury in the case.

Strontiana carb. is suited more to the scrofulous constitution. It is indicated in osteitis, particularly of the femur, with ulcers which discharge more or less broken-down bone. With the bone trouble there is apt to be a profuse exhausting diarrhoea almost like that accompanying hectic fever.

Another remedy is Chloride of Gold and Platinum which is useful for either caries or necrosis.

Gettysburg Salts, which owes its effectiveness to the lithium carbonate it contains, is useful especially in caries of the vertebrae and of the hip-joint.

Another use of Staphisagria is found in its application to gout. It is not so useful for the acute paroxysms as it is when gout becomes systemic, and the sodium urate, instead of being eliminated by the kidneys, is deposited in the various joints and organs of the body, producing arthritic nodes.

It is also indicated in arthritic ophthalmia. The eyes burn and feel very dry, notwithstanding which there are smarting and profuse lachrymation. The pains go from the eyes into the teeth.

In these gouty affections of the eyes, Colocynth is also a good remedy. Upon the stomach Staphisagria seems to produce a relaxation, so that the organ appears to hang down and is flabby and weak. This same symptom you will find under Ipecacuanha and Abrotanum. In Staphisagria there is a desire for brandy, wine or something stimulating. Such patients are subject to colic, which greatly resembles that of Colocynth.

You must also remember Staphisagria as a remedy in colic following operations about the abdomen. It is also efficacious when an incised wound, whether inflicted by the surgeon or by accident, is unduly sensitive.

In diarrhoea in children Staphisagria is indicated when the disorder is associated with a peculiar form of stomacace; the tongue and gums are white and spongy, while there are cutting pains before and after stool, with a great deal of tenesmus of the rectum during stool, and escape of flatus, which is usually hot and smells like rotten eggs (here being similar to Chamomilla) , stool being renewed by any attempt to take food or drink.

In its action on the female organs, Staphisagria causes prolapsus uteri, and this prolapsus is almost always associated with a flabby condition of the stomach. The whole abdomen—contents and parietes — feels as if it would drop, so relaxed is it. If you investigate thoroughly, you will find that disappointed love or permitting the mind to dwell on sexual subjects has favored this relaxation. The leucorrhcea which accompanies this condition is yellow and excoriating.

Impetuous, violent outbursts of passion, hypochondriacal, sad. Very sensitive as to what others say about her. Dwells on sexual matters; prefers solitude. Peevish. Child cries for many things, and refuses them when offered.

Nervous affections with marked irritability, diseases of the genito-urinary tract and skin, most frequently give symptoms calling for this drug. Acts on teeth and alveolar periosteum. Ill effects of anger and insults. Sexual sins and excesses. Very sensitive. Lacerated tissues. Pain and nervousness after extraction of teeth. Sphincters lacerated or stretched.

Worse, anger, indignation, grief, mortification, loss of fluids, onanism, sexual excesses, tobacco; least touch on affected parts. Better, after breakfast, warmth, rest at night.

Stupefying headache; passes off with yawning. Brain feels squeezed. Sensation of a ball of lead in forehead. Itching eruption above and behind ears (Oleand).

Heat in eyeballs, dims spectacles. Recurrent styes. Chalazæ (Platanus). Eyes sunken, with blue rings. Margin of lids itch. Affections of angles of eye, particularly the inner. Lacerated or incised wounds of cornea. Bursting pain in eyeballs of syphilitic iritis.

Toothache during menses. Teeth black and crumbling. Salivation, spongy gums, bleed easily (Merc; Kreos). Submaxillary glands swollen. After eating feels sleepy pyorrhea (Plantago)

Stitches flying to the ear on swallowing, especially left.

Flabby and weak. Desire for stimulants. Stomach feels relaxed. Craving for tobacco. Canine hunger, even when stomach is full. Nausea after abdominal operations.

Colic after anger. Hot flatus. Swollen abdomen in children, with much flatus. Colic, with pelvic tenesmus. Severe pain following an abdominal operation. Incarcerated flatus. Diarrhœa after drinking cold water, with tenesmus. Constipation (2 drops tincture night and morning), hæmorrhoids, with enlarged prostate.

Cystocele (locally and internally). Cystitis in lying-in patients. Ineffectual urging to urinate in newly married women. Pressure upon bladder; feels as if it did not empty. Sensation as if a drop of urine were rolling continuously along the channel. Burning in urethra during micturition. Prostatic troubles; frequent urination, burning in urethra when not urinating (Thuja; Sabal; Ferr pic). Urging and pain after urinating. Pain after lithotomy.

Especially after self-abuse; persistent dwelling on sexual subjects. Spermatorrhœa, with sunken features; guilty look; emissions, with backache and weakness and sexual neurasthenia. Dyspnœa after coition.

Parts very sensitive, worse sitting down (Berb; Kreos). Irritable bladder in young married women. Leucorrhœa. Prolapsus, with sinking in the abdomen; aching around the hips.

Muscles, especially of calves, feel bruised. Backache; worse in morning before rising. Extremities feel beaten and painful. Joints stiff. Crural neuralgia. Dull aching of nates extending to hip-joint and small of back.

Eczema of head, ears, face, and body; thick scabs, dry, and itch violently; scratching changes location of itching. Fig-warts pedunculated (Thuja). Arthritic nodes. Inflammation of phalanges. Night-sweats.

Inimical: Ranunc bulb. Complementary: Caust; Colocy. Compare: Ferrum pyrophos (tarsal cysts); Colocy; Caust; Ign; Phos ac; Calad. Antidote: Camph.

Third to thirtieth potency.

Staphysagria

Mind: The mental symptoms are very important, and the impressions made upon the mind and thence upon the body guide to Staphysagria as a remedy.

Excitable, easily aroused to anger, but seldom irascible, that is, easily disturbed and excited, but seldom manifests it.

Suitable in cases where complaints come from pent up wrath, suppressed anger, suppressed feelings. The person becomes speechless from suppressed indignation, anger with indignation. Complaints brought on by these causes; irritable bladder with frequent urging to urinate, lasting many days after suppressed wrath, after insults. "Great indignation about things done by others or by himself; grieves about consequences." A gentleman comes in contact with one beneath his station and an altercation takes place, an argument which ends in insult, and the gentleman turns his back on the other. He goes home and suffers; he does not speak it out, but controls it and then suffers from it.

He has sleepless nights and many days of fatigue, brain-fag; for days and weeks he cannot add nor subtract, makes mistakes in writing and speaking, has irritability of the bladder, colic, etc. Loss of memory with a sense of weight between the eyes; it is difficult to say whether this is a feeling in the head or an effort to describe a dullness of mind. Feels as if a ball of wood were in the forehead, or as if the whole cerebrum were made of wood; it feels numb.

It is difficult to state whether it is a condition of the mind or head. Accompanying this sensation of a lump in the forehead is a feeling as if the whole back of the head were hollow; the patient may describe it as a feeling of numbness or a lack of sensation.

"Indifferent, low-spirited, dullness of mind after onanism."

Staph. cures these conditions when they are the result of sexual excitement, masturbation, excesses in venery, allowing the mind to dwell too much on venereal subjects. Thinking on sexual relations. These patients are irritable, easily fatigued, most excitable, and when they have to control their emotions they suffer intensely.

One who is in health can easily put aside a controversy, knowing that he has done what is right, but a Staph. patient when he has to control himself goes all to pieces trembles from head to foot, loses his voice, his ability to work, cannot sleep and a headache follows.

Many a time a man has come into my office with blue lips, trembling hands, pains about the heart and all over, and he thinks he is going to die. He tells a story of an altercation and pent up wrath, and Staph. stops his trembling and quiets him. Without it he would have sleepless nights, brainfag, prostration and headache. This state belongs especially to those who have indulged in sexual excesses.

Now, the next step. The senses are in this same irritable state, so that the tips of the fingers are sensitive, the ears are sensitive to noise, the tongue is sensitive to tastes and the nun to odors; so sensitive that everything is painfully sensated.

Every little inflamed spot will have in its center sensitive points, little nerve spots; ulcers when touched cause the patient to go all to pieces and a convulsion threatens.

Hoemorrhoidal tumors are so sensitive that they cannot be touched. Little nerve tumors form in the skin, little polypoid growths the size of a wheat grain and denuded of epithelium, covered with moisture, red, inflamed, blue, and a mere touch will throw the patient into convulsions and suffering for days and nights. A hypersensitive nerve growth will come out on the hand or on the back. Sometimes it turns back.

Women: Again, a little wart will come out, especially about the genitals and anus, little caruncular growths about the urethra and vagina, so sensitive that if nipped between the fingers the patient will go into spasms, especially if a woman.

Staph. suits all three of the miasms.

These nervous states run all through the complaints. Look for a case of Staph. where the whole mind and nervous system are in a fret. The Staph. headache is a numb, dull pain in the occiput and forehead, especially in these nervous constitutions.

"Sensation as of a round ball in the forehead, sitting firmly there even when shaking the, head."

Headaches from vexation and indignation. Crusty, squamous eruptions on the scalp. "Painful sensitiveness of the scalp, skin peels off, with itching and smarting, worse in the evening and from getting warm."

The scales are lifted up by a watery exudate and the denuded surface is extremely sensitive to touch.

New growths about the lids and balls of the eyes, extremely painful to the touch. Meibomian tumors (Con., Thuja), in irritable children (Kreos).

Another feature in Staph, is its action on the glands; scrofulous glands; glands of the neck enlarge; enlarged and indurated ovaries and testes; stitching, tearing pains in the glands everywhere. Hardness and chronic induration. Stitching, tearing pains along the course of the nerves; in the heart, and as in such a nervous patient the mind is likely to be on the heart, the stitching pains in the intercostals are supposed to be in the heart. Stitching pains directly through the chest to the back.

Swelling of the tonsils after the abuse of Mercury. Chronic tonsilitis, tonsils are not large but hard from previous attacks of acute tonsilitis; strumous diathesis; cross and irritable. "Pains come on after eating."

The Staph. patient has much difficulty in the bowels. Subject to chronic diarrhoea and to constipation. Colic, twitching, tearing pains in the abdomen. Diarrhoea from cold water, from eating, from indignation, anger, with flatulence of a terribly offensive odor like spoiled eggs. "Chronic diarrhoea or dysentery of weakly, sickly children after anger; after being punished, after emotions." (Coloc. and Cham.)

Staph. and Coloc. resemble each other. In both, eating and drinking cause griping and stool, both have colic as if stones were squeezing; Staph. in the intestines, head and testes; Coloc. in the intestines and ovaries; both are worse from anger. Caust., CoIoc. and Staph. follow each other like Sulph., Calc. and Lyc.

It often happens that nervous women soon after marriage are attacked with frequent and painful urging to urinate which becomes extremely troublesome and may last many days. Staph, is very comforting to the young wife.

Urinary and Genitals: Great teasing and tearing all night long bloody urine; involuntary discharge of urine, acrid and corroding, with burning, worse from motion.

Profuse discharge of pale urine with burning and urging. Burning during and after urination. Staph. has cured enlarged prostate with frequent urging to urinate, especially in old men; continued teasing with dribbling.

''Frequent urging to urinate, with a scanty discharge in thin stream or discharge of urine in drops; may be followed by a sensation as if the bladder were not fully emptied."

The most distressing symptom of the male genitals is excitability, but there is also impotence, great weakness of the sexual organs; the sexual desire is greatly increased but there is impotence.

Useful in the results of secret vice, long practiced.

"Seminal emissions followed by great chagrin and mortification, prostration, dyspnoea. Effects of onanism or sexual excesses; loss of memory, hypochondriasis, taciturnity, face sunken, abashed look, nocturnal emissions, backache, weak legs, relaxed organs, deficiency of vital heat and tendency to take cold, deep sunken, red, and lusterless eyes, hair falls out; loss of prostatic fluid and impairment of sexual desire; dull and contusive pains in the testicles, voluptuous itching of the scrotum, atrophy of the testicles."

Think of the extremely nervous patient. Dry, sensitive warts about the genitals, from sycosis or from the abuse of Mercury, which cause a tendency to warty growths. Moist red, offensive warts belong to Thuja.

The testes dwindle as well as become inflamed and swollen; genitals waste away.

Sensation as if there were worms crawling over him. Crawling, etc., in the female external genitals, Coff., Plat., Petrol., Apis, Tarent. hisp, the latter has. While outer parts feel as if insects were biting. and crawling, better from heat or cold.

In the female there is violent sexual excitement, nymphomania with extreme mental and physical impressions; mind has been dwelling too much on sexual subjects.

"Very sharp, shooting pains in the ovary, which is exquisitely sore to touch; pains extend along crural regions and thighs.

Menses irregular, late and profuse, sometimes wanting; first of pale blood, then dark and clotted.

Scorbutic diathesis, vegetations of the vagina; stinging, itching of the vulva."

Miscellaneous: Stitching in the region of the heart; trembling of the body with nervous excitement is an excellent indication for Staph. Effects from loss of blood, shock, from surgical operations, injuries from sharp instruments, incised wounds. Stinging, etc., in surgical wounds, cuts; colic after lithotomy, urging to stool, qualmishness, worse from drinking. Tetter on the hands, itches and burns in the evening after scratching; numbness in the tips of the fingers; arthritic nodosities on the fingers. I remember a patient suffering from gouty nodosities; he had lived a life of peculiar continence, dwelling on his vices, broken down in body. Staph. brought out an eruption on his legs as high up as the knees that looked like a pair of trousers.

One continuous coat of crusts which lasted a year before it dwindled, but he was greatly improved in his body and his enlarged joints gradually improved. The eruption was yellow, crusty, tough, leathery, and, when lifted up by the moisture beneath, it had to be cut off like a bandage; he was practically crippled; new crops came out on the parts clipped off. It was with difficulty that be walked, for the crusts cut him. Bone troubles, exostoses, inflammation of the periosteum.
