Especially of frequent employment in diseases of children, where peevishness, restlessness, and colic give the needful indications. Bad temper. Frantic irritability, snappish and intolerant of pain. Mad during pain. Magnifies her pains. Unappeasable crossness. OVERSENSITIVE. Tosses about, cries out or walks the floor (Ars.); demands instant relief. Beside himself or prostrated by pain. Neuralgic or gouty-rheumatic subjects. Spells of being irritable and restless; OF COLIC; of dry, tickling cough, etc. Cramps, with bilious vomit; of muscles. Numb, on awaking; after pain; hands, when grasping objects. Repeated spasms; of face, arms, legs, etc. .................... UGLY, CROSS, AND UNCIVIL. QUARRELSOME; vexed at every trifle. Abrupt. Averse to being spoken to or touched. WANTS TO BE CARRIED or what is refused when offered. Omits words. Sensitive to cold wind about ears. Sticking, earache; > warmth. Swelling, or REDNESS OF ONE CHEEK. Faceache (r), to ear. Jaws feel tired. Bad, sour breath. Bitter taste. Thick, yellow- white fur on tongue. Eructations like bad eggs. Distended bowels. Colic going upward; < anger (Colo.). Cutting or wind colic; < night. STOOLS, hot, ACID, GRASS-GREEN, SLIMY, HACKED, yellow-green, OR LIENTERIC; smelling like bad eggs. Irregular, labor-like pains; going up; down inner thighs. Cramps when child nurses. Dark, lumpy menses or lochia. Asthma, < dry weather. Jaundice. Dry palms. Sleepy, disturbed, by pain, starting up, etc. Chilly, yet easily over-heated, hence takes cold. Coldness of one part, with heat of another; < uncovering. Alternate chill and heat. Hot and thirsty or hot sweat, with the pains. Hot coryza; hot stools. Feverish, from suppressed discharges. Sweat on head. Sleepless from abuse of narcotics.

The mental state goes along with this. Sensitiveness of the mind. Great irritability. These two run through Chamomilla so closely that they are inseparable. Sensitiveness to pain. Easily affected by mortification, by chagrin, so that the nerves become extremely sensitive from these causes, and pains, convulsions, colic, headaches and other kinds of nervous symptoms set in. The nervous child when punished will go into convulsions. The oversensitive nervous woman will suffer from chagrin. Jerking and twitching of muscles from mortification and excitement. Excessive sensibility of the nerves, so excessive that only a few remedies equal it, such as Coffea, Nux vom. and Opium. Of course, without hearing a lecture on Opium you naturally think of Opium as capable of producing stupor. Those of you who have seen, the awful state of mind and distress that follow the administration of the crude Opium will understand what I mean by the Chamomilla sensitivity. Convulsions of children. Convulsions: It is not an uncommon thing, even now-a-days, and especially when practicing in the country, for the young mothers and the nurses to give for baby Camomile tea for colic, and the baby goes into convulsions.

Persons, especially children, with light-brown hair, nervous, excitable temperament; oversensitive from use or abuse of coffee or narcotics. Children, new-born and during period of dentition. Pain; seems unendurable, drives to despair; <by heat; < evening before midnight; with heat, thirst and fainting with numbness of affected part; eructations <. Oversensitive to open air; great aversion to wind, especially about ears. Sleepy but cannot sleep (Bell., Caust., Op.).

Modest little weed which flourishes about this time of the year in rick-yards among the litter of thrashings, with its acrid scent, and its white petals that bend backwards, as if putting their little hands behind them. This distinguishes it from rather like flowers. As my " herb-woman ” used to say, “ there are two of every kind ”, i.e. the '* herb ” of great utility, and the counterfeit weed that looks so like it, but is useless. But, as a rule, it is scent, or the want of scent, that distinguishes them easily. An excellent name for Chamomilla is ” Cannot bear it ”. “ Can’t bear himself.” " Can’t bear other people.” ” Can’t bear pain ” {Coffea, Aeon). Can’t bear things : wants them, and hurls them away. Everything is simply intolerable. You look at the Chamomilla baby and often see one brilliant cheek : you touch its head, and find it warm and wet. Cham, is one of Clarke's ” Nursery A.B.C. drugs ”—Aeon., Bell., Cham. Aconite is turmoil in circulation. Belladonna is turmoil in brain. Chamomilla is turmoil in temper.* If Cham, is a sick baby he is easily spotted. He will whine and howl and insist on being carried. The moment the tired mother or the jaded father tries to sit down, or to set him down, the music starts afresh ; and the trouble is worse at night. Or, short of this, he stretches out his little hand for thing after thing, and when it is offered pushes it away in disgust. ” He does not know what he wants ” (says Nash), " but the doctor knows—it is Chamomilla.” When a little older Cham., when sick, will order his nurse or mother out of the room. We have seen a mother crouching outside a closed door, inside which her small sick son was raving if she dared to poke her nose inside. When still older he will refuse to see the doctor.
